It seems to me the reason that the Mayan calendar ended around 2012, is because the Mayans or the South American's lose their present control of the US government around 2012 due to civil wars in the US, etc., so that they cannot see into the future by means of time travel and information passed to them back in time by means of their present control of the US government.
I just noticed that the path of the neutrino beam focused by the moon during the solar eclipse of the sun on 11.13.2012, crosses right near South America where the Mayans lived in the pacific ocean, so that the major Earth quake damages and floods may only occur in South America primarily and no where else on Earth at that date, and hence the end of the Mayan Calendar may occur around 11.13.2012, since the Mayans foreseeing or calculating the floods and Earth quakes near their lands in South America around that date may have moved or ended their calendar at that date. With modern force field technologies we should be able to deflect the moon's neutrino beams somewhat to prevent or lessen the effects on the Earth's crust.
