The above part was a fairly dumb idea because the key electron will merely
form an orbital on the proton and deform the lattice.

It seems to me getting Li++ into an ionic lattice is possibly an effective
idea.  Deposition of Li and Pd by sputtering, on a base of copper or gold,
followed by electrolysis to load protons where feasible and raise fugacity,
may be a reasonable approach.
