Some of these same ones in astronomy departments all over the world spend a shocking amount of time applying 'correcting factors' to observed superliminal relative velocities and build models in their minds of which Ptolemy would be proud in order to continue to try to justify to themselves Einstein's 100 year old and outmoded idea of the supposed 'universal speed limit'. They really do not know what is really going on many thousands of light years from us; and to assume that the volume of an element of space is a constant for purposes of these calculations may preserve careers at the cost of setting back real advancement of our understanding.
