As one of the green activists who often seem to be sneered at in articles such as this, I have to say that all this "considered opinion" is now saying precisely what environmentalists have been warning about for at least 50 years. It only gives me a kind of twisted pleasure to say "TOLD YOU SO, YOU ARROGANT, IRRESPONSIBLE, VAIN, GREEDY, PATRONISING MORONS"
I feel the same way, and I suppose Winston Churchill probably the same way when he was called upon to form a cabinet in May 1940. Yet he kept on many of Chamberlain's appointees. He later explained why:
"If one were dependent on the people who had been right in the last few years, what a tiny handful one would have to depend on."
(Lucas, J., The Duel, p. 61)
He also said:
"If we open a quarrel between the past and the present, we shall find that we have lost the future."
- June 18, 1940. ibid, p. 137
I try to remember that, in anticipation of the day when people begin to take cold fusion seriously.
