Yes, apparently they were used for therapy, like massage. Modern doctors have found low current helps some patients.

artifacts, so it is dangerous to assert that an Edison foil pnonograph could
not have been built.

As I said, I do not know about other ancient civilizations, other than Europe, China and Japan. I do not know what the Egyptians accomplished.
