Here is a depressing article from today's Atlanta Journal. A company just spent $24 million developing a self-heating coffee can powered by CaO. This is in a country that somehow cannot afford to risk $1 million or even $100,000 on cold fusion research.

In the world of food packaging, some innovations are like Post-it notes: You didn't know you needed them until they were invented. Witness tea bags, canned tomatoes and juice boxes.

Wolfgang Puck introduced a new line of lattes this month. That the Los Angeles chef has stamped his name on yet another product isn't surprising. But the container is: It heats itself.

Pushing the button on the bottom of the can activates the heating mechanism in a new line of lattes by Wolfgang Puck. The technology is expected to expand to other foods.

It took a California company named OnTech seven years and $24 million to create the self-heating cans, which are activated by pushing a plastic button on the bottom. Water flows into a sealed inner cone filled with quicklime, which is mostly calcium oxide. . . ."
