Using drugs to work on the problem is only likely to get you labeled a
"drug user", and in this country you go to jail for that.
More seriously, the United States is currently a house divided, and
while a fair fraction of the people in this country might agree with
your sentiments, a roughly equal fraction would disagree strongly and
even find them offensive. Two elections in a row, roughly half the
people who voted expressed a preference for George Bush. The fact that
so many who did not prefer him view him so negatively is a symptom of
the wildly differing ways Americans are now looking at the world. It's
been a long time since the country was last so polarized.
