In the late 1990s the UV instrument on board SOHO observed the solar wind emanating from the poles of the Sun, and found that the wind accelerates much faster than can be accounted for by normal physics (thermodynamic expansion) alone.

in addition to adiabatic expansion the magnetic field lines affect the solar wind -- as you near the poles the field lines are open -- the field lines are closed as you approach the ecliptic -- the ecliptic solar wind oft times is not supersonic and quite variable
