There is definitely a role for government in providing basic infrastructure, such as roads, basic network infrastructure, etc. The question is how to find the right balance, what does government do, what does private industry do, and how much should private industry be guided by government. The answers are never as easy as everyone pretends. Al Gore was one of the few people in the history of the US who could strike that balance very intelligently (the internet, ReGov, etc) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Partnership_for_Reinventing_Government
