Thanks Jones, for the link.  It is an interesting article.

Stainless at 800C was probably not a good choice because it is a prolific
proton conductor at high temperatures (though reproducing the experiment
may require SS).  It would probably be better to use a steel that is nearer
to pure iron from a high temperature H2 containment standpoint.  I don't
know why they used a 3L vessel when the fuel was probably less than half a
liter.  The fuel would seem to have been in a pile in the bottom.

One possible vessel for a perhaps scaled down version of that experiment
would be to use an empty steel gas lecture bottle.  It is already designed
with high pressure threaded fitting and probably could be obtained from
some gas supply shops for next to nothing.  Even filled, they are only a
little over $200.

You would want to make provision for it to be at high temperature but still
have the heat variably withdrawn.  There are many ways to do this.  It
would be a fun experiment.
