Howdy Robin,
In the history of civilization there has only been one generation like the past 60 years. It can be keyed to cheap and abundant forms of energy . That generation is over. Those that can adjust to and benefit from the end of big oil will survive the next human drama. Surprisingly, the most vulnerable is China and the middle east oil producers, not the USA. The USA has one advantage over the world.. the ability to radically adjust to changing times. It will be painful and frightening to the younger but only a repeat to the few remaining alive that experienced the 1930's
