The EndNote program is now available in a free version.

I highly recommend this program to anyone writing scientific papers. It is
a relational database that generates footnotes or endnotes and inserts them
into Microsoft Word documents. It generates the endnotes in a wide variety
of formats. It keeps track of the numbers and arranges them in groups such
as "[2, 4-8]." You can see examples in this paper:

Ed Storms uses it, and used it to organize most of the items in the
LENR-CANR.org database.

I use it to maintain the database. I wrote a program to convert from the
EndNote format to the online relational database.
