Perhaps you mean "significant gain" or "gain enough for practical or economic use." I think Steve Krivit and some others say that a gain has to be 1 or above or it does not count. Unless you get out 2 W for every 1 W of input, it isn't a "gain" by their standards. Some people call the gain the "COP," but I think that is technically inaccurate. That means "coefficient of production." As far as I know it only applies to heat pumps. They do not create any energy, as I am sure everyone here understands.
