I suppose I'm the only Vort who has been evacuated from his house due the fires
in southern California. Standing on the edge of Canyonback, where most of the
TV stations broadcast from is at once awe inspiring and horrifying. The sheer
intensity of the fires and the glowing cinders of their aftermath is, I hate to
say it, beautiful. No TV broadcast can capture the look. Considering that my
house could go up in flames anytime soon it's difficult to have that attitude,
but there you have it. My house is a short walk from Canyonback, so I will owe
a serious debt of gratitude to those airplane and helicopter pilots who have
been dumping massive quantities of water and flame retardant down the slope
where the fire could climb up and wipe out my neighborhood.
