[snip] I think Jones answered that the other day. Hydrogen has a low density, so it takes up a lot of room in the cylinder. Much more than a liquid fuel would. Consequently, the energy liberated in each power stroke is less. There is simply both less fuel and less oxygen in the cylinder.
