IMO they are both fixed and correlated, though unknown. IOW
whatever spin state the one has, the other has the opposite (from
conservation of angular momentum I think), but the actual axis of
rotation could be in any direction relative to the source, or not,
the latter depending on exactly what happens in the source. This
is one of the pieces of missing information.
