As the wreckage of the once gigantic jet-liner was fished out of the choppy waters off Long Island, many honest citizens came forward saying they had seen the plane explode after being hit by what looked, and sounded, like an errant surface-to-air missile.

The FBI Interviewed more than 150 witnesses who claimed to have seen a bright object streaking towards the jumbo jet in mid-flight, but investigators never corroborated or confirmed any of those eye witness reports: implying that it was probably just a strange episode of some kind of mass-hysteria, most likely .... riiight.

After lengthy public hearings into the disaster, The National Transportation Safety Board concluded that fuel vapors in the center tank had suddenly exploded, blowing the nose off the plane.

This - despite the fact that nothing similar had ever happened before and it was impossible to recreate that scenario in independent testing. The most notable conspiracy theory is the widely belief that a missile from a U.S. Navy ship was responsible. Along with the lone-gunman "final-say-so", this is on the short list of "official" explanations which the majority of thinking individuals, of all political persuasions, are most likely to reject - after reviewing the facts.

So prevalent were these conspiracy theories that the term "Pierre Salinger Syndrome" - which has been broadened into a belief that almost everything on the Internet is (at least arguably) true - has entered the lexicon. Salinger's evidence was an e-mail from Richard Russell, a former United Airlines pilot who also used to investigate crashes for the Airline Pilots Association. A few months after Salinger stepped forward, Russell obtained even more damning evidence: a videotape of radar screens from the night of the explosion.

For investigators, the conspiracy theories "wasted our time and diverted valuable resources." The FBI still maintains that there is no evidence of a criminal act. Duh. They insinuate that the videotapes were likely doctored. They are silent on the possibility of an military error and have steadfastly refused to allow unsupervised interviews with any crew of the USS Normandy.

What "real" purpose is served in such a case by letting the public know the whole truth ? - that - apparently, is the neocon sentiment on proceeding with any inquiry on this type of thing. They are probably correct - in a strange sort of way.

"Ten Years After" (the rockers) sez: "I'll leave it up to you"

Tax the rich, feed the poor
Till there are no rich no more

I'd love to change the world
But I don't know what to do
So I'll leave it up to you

Population keeps on breeding
Nation bleeding, still more feeding economy
Life is funny, skies are sunny
Bees make honey, who needs money, monopoly

I'd love to change the world
But I don't know what to do
So I'll leave it up to you

World pollution, there's no solution
Institution, electrocution
Just black and white, rich or poor
Them and us, stop the war

I'd love to change the world
But I don't know what to do
So I'll leave it up to you
