Along the same lines, in today's news the Mayor Bloomberg of New York City announced a plan to replace all New York taxicabs with hybrid cars within five years.

Last month he also decreed that all NYC diesel trucks and construction equipment, etc. WILL use biodiesel when it becomes available.

Needless to say, biodiesel is now available ... even if at a considerable markup, as every Russian emigrant in Little Odessa with a deep fat fryer is a wannabe-green biofuel merchant.

Hmm... You are probably referring to the old Salon story?

http://archive.salon.com/politics/feature/2000/10/28/stocks/index.html

I suppose that his well-oiled and established political 'machine' still raises quite a bit more money than people realize - and that they spend very little on media advertising - so they must invest it somewhere ... (it wouldn't look too good to be investing in China) but anyway, one doubts that GM is in his portfolio; or else, one (like AlGore) hopes that it was heavily weighted in GM <g>.

Wonder how much, if any, of his present political wealth derives from effectively putting W into office in 2000?

That chapter of history has not been fully written yet; but Gore can't complain too loudly when he could not even carry his home state. Yet, I suspect that Katherine Harris meant more to Bush than Nader did.

Aside from all the other irregularities in that stolen election, Harris proved that in Florida in 2000, it was legally possible, even easy, to purge thousands of eligible (mostly elderly) voters from the rolls in certain selected jurisdictions, denying them the right to vote... and if the timing is precise, there is nothing which can be done.

Not sure things have changed all that much ... except that Katherine got some of her due 'payback,' with more waiting on the back burner. She was deeply implicated in the Randy "Duke" Cunningham bribery scandal which resulted in the Duke's criminal conviction and resignation, but the Bush Brothers - with Gonzo's esteemed help - thus far have protected Katherine by firing two of the Federal attorneys who were hot on her tail. If W doesn't issue her a blanket pardon for that little skeleton, then she better work hard to steal another election for her neocon pals, or else she will add new meaning to that label ...
