The title is "Peugeot 308 Diesel Hybrid Gets 69 MPG "
Yes, a diesel hybrid is a better solution for long-haul
transportation, such as automobile commuting hundreds of miles a day,
or highway trucks and railroad locomotives. I doubt that it would be
worth putting extra batteries in them to have them run for 1 hour out
of 8 on battery power alone.
For railroads, overhead wire electric power is by far the most
efficient method, but this would not be cost-effective on long
stretches of the U.S., Russian or Chinese railroad systems, because
the distances are so great.
