The Gecko stuff, both natural and artificial, is said to work due to
the van der Waals force. This is related to the Casimir force:

Some people even think the van der Waals force and the Casimir force
are one and the same. Regardless the cause, the 1/r^n, n>2, nature
of either force type should permit the force reduction of sliding
force vs straight on attraction/retraction. This is the basis of my
Casimir Generator design as specified in the article noted above.
