First, the price is right - obviously since it is carried by Walmart, made with Chinese parts by Currie and assemble in California - and possibly of mediocre to decent quality.

The price sure it right. A lot of low income people and people commuting short distances will find it affordable. I can testify that commuting on an electric bicycle is easier and more fun than a regular bicycle, and I am something of a health nut. Wearing business clothes on a regular bike does not cut it.

I know nothing about the motor or batteries, but as a bicycle the one I saw was fine. It is obviously not a top-of-the line bike, but the wheels, frame, brakes and so on looked okay to me. (And I know a shoddy bike when I see one!)

Minus the motor and battery, my guess is that this is a reasonably light machine. It looks like a normal $200 bicycle, which should weight ~30 lbs with a carrier. The battery is said to be 18 lbs, and my guess is that the motor is ~15 lbs, which comes to about the rated ~70 lbs. The Lafree is 80 lbs. It cost around $1200 as I recall.
