Have you seen "Who Killed the Electric Car"?  If not, I'll be glad to
send you a copy (pirate).  GM had a position which could have
guaranteed their survival in these times but their management
capitulated with big oil.  They sold the Ovonics battery technology to
Chevron and killed their future.

I say let them die a partial death.  Take a small position by the
gov't and pick an choose which divisions will survive.

They could come back.  But they must have a NDE first.
