I think this is not proof, but rather one of many indications of life on Mars which taken together add up to proof. There is a third too. For pixel coordinates and URL of the original NASA photo, see top of page 9 of:
http://www.mtaonline.net/~hheffner/MarsLichen.pdffor my post of February 25, 2004 on this topic, and much more ancillary information. My hypothesis for the fibrous material: "decaying [lichen] medulla, which consists of lots of one celled hyphae, very thin long white fibers." A copy of the vortex post is appended below.

Not all the Opportunity grind photos are completely fuzzy. For example:

This photo shows twisted rope-like fiber bundles at pixel coordinates: 494,392; 530,188; 341,136. One of the features is cut and attached. There are also various depressions that have the look of containing adisrupted and mangled fiber mat. Not as clear as the twisted fiber bundles
noted above, but it still looks like the grind area had a lot of fibrous material in it. Attachment converted: Hard Disk:rope.JPG 1 (JPEG/JVWR) (00020C76) Regards, Horace Heffner
