2009 Geneva Auto Show: Bentley Biofuel Scheduled For Production in 2009

The ultra-green Bentley ... err make that the biofueled "Extreme Bentley" will
make its debut on March 3 at the 2009 Geneva Auto Show - and is bound for
production later this year, but will be priced higher than the 602-horsepower
Bentley Continental. No doubt that the first one will be bought by James Bond.

HOWEVER - It is painfully obvious - really ROTFL - that David Reuter, Bentley's
U.S. spokesman, is most unclear on the concept of "green" - at least when it
does not apply to ca$h. (or to the popular paint job: "British racing green")

Here are a few of his absurd comments:"Last year we laid out our strategy for
biofuel cars by 2012," said on Wednesday. "We said our first biofuel car will
be on the road by 2009. This is that product."

[so far so good]

While unable to give exact pricing or the name of the vehicle at this point,
Reuter said the biofuel Bentley will be more expensive than the Bentley
Continental GT Speed. "If you look at the Continental GT Speed, it is priced
around $203,000," he said. "This (biofuel) car will be more powerful and have a
premium price over the GT Speed." Bentley in a statement on Tuesday said its
first biofuel offering will be its "fastest, most powerful production car
ever." It said the vehicle is "delivering stage one of Bentley's environmental
commitment and pioneering the use of this fuel in the luxury sector."

[Whoa - 700 horsepower - quarter million sticker shock, and the "fastest, most
powerful production car ever... even if it does guzzle veggie oil - hey man-
get a grip... this is NOT real ecology - it is more akin to pandering to the
guilty conscience of rich conspicuous-consumers.

... well, it does give the notion of conspicuous-con-sumption a totally
recolored look-and-feel however... and maybe that is the real message: Guzzle
but guzzle-green.

Still, lie many of you, I am "British racing green" with envy ...
