The following URL gives some useful information on the ebook formats
available:
http://www.fictionwise.com/publisherinfo.htm
It gives the Mobipocket file type as .PRC and the Kindle file type
as .MOBI so there must be some difference. It also provides the
names of a number of ebook publishers, some of whom publish in .PDF
format.
An interesting statement: "We do, however, strongly urge you to
consider selling MultiFormat eBooks--buyers have fewer problems with
MultiFormat eBooks and generate better sales than secure eBooks."
It is notable that Fictionwise only accepts books in .RTF format, yet
provides them in 14 formats, so there must be some very good format
conversion utility somewhere.
Noticed in passing: a good site for the prospective amateur book writer:
http://www.authonomy.com/
http://www.authonomy.com/FAQ.aspx
Apparently it is text string only, and presently HTML accessible
only, but it should be a good platform to develop writing skills and
eventual ebooks.
