Better to build on rocky uplands and hills, where foundations -- of larger communal living arrangements like apartment complexes: forget most detached "single-family" "freehold"(pfft) dwellings -- can be solidly anchored. Not to mention that the panoramic views (and EM reception) are better (our ancestors knew a thing or two about 'feng shui' placement...) Leave the floodplains to the plants and animals. We no longer have need to truck water uphill by hand either, for that matter; or feel we've 'lucked out' by staking out some artesian spring, etc. And for that matter: I wonder if anyone here has ever heard of Arcosanti, et al.
