They do say that commodity cartels are generally short-lived.  I recall
reading that back when Opec was shaking the pillars of power, and of
course, Opec has since lost much of its importance.

The one exception I'm aware of is the DeBeers diamond cartel, which has
retained its power over the price of diamonds for decades.  The fact
that nobody actually needs their product may have something to do with
that, however (industrial diamonds don't have inflated prices, AFAIK,
only the ones intended for jewelry).
