There is an old claim of flesh being made semi-transparent by putting it in a fluid that has the same index of refraction as skin/flesh. It is possible that without a large change in the index of refraction skin and flesh more transmissive than we expect. Photos of a bat or a human arm being see-through like an x-ray were included, but this was quite very old.
