Dear Vorts,

I see by the subject header that some messages on Vortex have been directed at me personally again.

I had thought people on Vortex were more mature than this.

You did? Where did you get that idea?

I had thought people on Vortex had less tolerance for personal attacks.

You are, Steve, a political figure in this area. Your activity makes you subject to criticism in ways that wouldn't be appropriate for others, including, in fact, some of those whom you criticize.

I had thought that personal attacks were unacceptable etiquette here.

They should be unacceptable etiquette for New Energy Times, much more. This is just a mailing list, often contentious, with no authority except the natural authority of cogent statement.

Perhaps people on Vortex feel that the rules on Vortex are different for me because of the work I do.

Yes.

If that's the way you want Vortex to be, not a problem. Journalists are used to people coming unglued when we report hard-hitting facts that ruffle people's feathers.

Or when they become advocates for their own idiosyncratic ideas, straying entirely from journalistic ethics and norms. Get thee an editor, Steve, and you can be a journalist again. I'd recommend it. You were a decent journalist, hard-working, willing to dig up the real story, often. But gradually you started making yourself and your opinions the story. Mistake. Back up and back off.

This is just an opinion of an individual, written on a mailing list which has no editorial standards beyond very primitive ones and the opinion of the list owner. Take it or leave it, you are responsible for what you do in either case.

As I told Jed on the phone just now, the press conference was webcast and Adam Dylewski from the ACS News Service was monitoring the chat room and relaying questions from the Web audience.

Cool.

If Jed "hears" anything else about me, he is welcome to check his facts with me in advance before spreading hearsay and misunderstandings about me.

Steve, there was nothing reprehensible alleged by Jed, in fact he considered it worthwhile. He made a mistake, that's all. Worth all this? I think you were really talking about something else. Right?
