This columnist seems alarmed by the fact that China is moving ahead.
It seems to me that is cause for celebration. China produces more
pollution and consumes more coal than any other nation, so they need
renewable energy more than the rest of the world. Also, if they
pioneer the technology, the U.S. and others can buy it from them,
just as Japan bought off-the-shelf technology from the U.S. in the
1950s, and saved themselves the trouble of developing it. It seems
clear to me it is more cost effective to buy ready-made solutions,
because otherwise the Japanese would have independently re-invented
as much as they could.
I do not understand why anyone thinks that their gain is our loss.
If they were moving ahead rapidly in cold fusion I would be thrilled.
Actually, they may be, since they are paying for Arata's work, and
reportedly replicating it back in China.
