The splitting of the fine spectral lines is explained by the second  
azimuthal quantum number l.
That determines if the orbit is of the shape S,P, D,or F.  Summerfield  
described the fine spectral lines
in terms of elliptical orbits.  How do S, P, D and F orbits come out  of an 
ellipse.
I have always been baffled by this.
