After Edano talked, some engineers held a press conference. They said that the very latest data indicates that the cloud of steam or smoke was not the source of the radiation spike. That was probably from the breach in the unit 2 torus reported yesterday.
The two events happened to occur at the same time, they say. Radiation levels reached 4 to 8 microsieverts but are now subsiding. Pressure and temperatures are stable in unit 3. They did not discuss the source of the white cloud. I gather they do not know. They have been venting steam periodically from units 1, 2 and 3. They cannot add new cooling water otherwise. The steam has quite a lot of contamination. It is regrettable that they have to do this. - Jed
