If it contains boron then the primary reaction may be:-

p + B11 => 3 He4 + 8.7 MeV

Because the energy is divided up over three alpha particles, they are usually
fairly low energy, which would go a long way toward explaining the lack of
serious radiation.  (A 2 MeV alpha particle simply doesn't have the energy to
produce spallation neutrons).

The p-B11 reaction is known as perhaps the cleanest fusion reaction around.

(BTW note that he didn't include copper in the list. ;)
