They haven't made electric clocks like that for 30 years! They all have
quartz crystal timers in them. I have a 20-year-old bedroom clock with a
battery backup for the timer.

Automobile clocks used to run off the battery directly. Before quartz timers
came along they were notoriously unreliable. They would be off by a hour or
more after a few months.

I guess back the 1970s they must have had different electric clocks for east
and west Japan. I never noticed. Then and now, I seldom knew what time it
is. I used a wind-up pocket watch which I often forgot to wind. I now use a
battery-powered pocket watch, since I do not like to be reminded of how
quickly time passes.
