Good to hear from you, Horace.

Indeed, your explanation is a possibility; however, I'm not sure we
see the same reaction with asteroids.  Really, there is no way to be
sure when an asteroid collides with the sun from the SOHO data alone.
They are not as obvious as comets.  You could be right and all CMEs
might result from an external mass collision with Sol.

However, I tend toward Spaandonk's explanation, ie the hydrogen from
the comet's water is reacting with the corona.

One thing is sure, fizzix is fun!
