IRM must release quite a lot of energy during it's creation (hundreds of eV /
atom), so it has to be stable because there is nowhere that it can get energy to
expand again. That means that it just has to sit there until a fusion reaction
takes place. A fusion reaction is the only local energy source that could
provide energy concentrated enough to destroy it.
(Of course the creation of more IRH could provide the energy, but that's a zero
sum game).

Being in an energy well is an aspect that it shares with Hydrinos.
