It is silly, or it is a misunderstanding.

A trade secret would be a form of "security by obscurity." With modern
instruments and a device of this importance, a trade secret will not last
one month. I assume Rossi intends to protect his intellectual property with
patents. A patent has to be transparent. It has to be as good as opening up
the cell. If a patent does not teach a person having ordinary skill in the
art how to make the catalyst, then it will be ruled invalid, and Rossi will
have no protection.

Therefore, it makes no sense to protect the device with a self-destruct
mechanism. The only reason to do this would be to prevent users from hurting
themselves by direct exposure to material undergoing a reaction. I do not
believe that is possible in any case. As I said, I assume this material
destroys itself when it is exposed to air. I doubt this is not something
Rossi designed; it is in the nature of a highly reactive catalyst.
