Makes me wonder if the (unconscious?) motivation for its existence came out of a realization by the physics powerbrokers that they needed a reason to justify an even larger research budget. "Let's hypothesize a new particle that probably doesn't exist, and it'll take a ginormous accelerator, which will take 10 years to build, to prove that!" -m
