Shooting fast protons into a gas (or any other matter) doesn't produce a positive energy balance. This is because the protons lose 99.99% of their energy stripping electrons from atoms, and most of the few that do get close to a nucleus get repelled by the electrostatic force. Only a very small number of actual fusion reactions occur. In fact this is how fusion was first discovered. Regards, Robin van Spaandonk http://rvanspaa.freehostia.com/project.html
