I do not know whether they had significant excess heat, but there is no
doubt they manually changed the data to hide their results. You do not have
to take anyone's word for that. They left their fingerprints on the data.
The changes could only have been made deliberately, by a human being. No
program would have done it. See my analysis of the published graph on p. 22
and 23, here:

You can see this is fake data. You can tell that even without seeing the
original (which is also shown on that page).

My guess is that they saw some indication of excess heat in the data they
accidentally gave to Mallove, and they decided to get rid of every trace.
It may have been insignificant, but they did not want to leave any
questions or doubts.
