Exponentials are unsustainable in a limited environment such as Earth's biosphere -- that's a given. The real problem is that, unlike other social organizations of animals, eusocial organization tends to be ecologically dominant combined with the fact that humans are uniquely capable of expanding their ecological range through technology.
It doesn't matter what energy technologies we have at our disposal if we don't remove eusocial human organization -- civilization -- from the biosphere. Failure to remove civilization from the biosphere will destroy the biosphere.
