The centennial of the Titanic disaster has produced a burst of blather in the mass media. Okay, some of it is accurate. There is little discussion about the larger institutional causes of the disaster, or the reaction to it, which was mainly an effort to whitewash the truth and derail reform.
I have read many books and articles about the Titanic. I recommend this one above all others: Wade, W.C. 1986. "The Titanic: End of a Dream," Penguin Books I think Joseph Conrad made one of the most apt comments about the disaster: "There’s nothing more heroic in being drowned very much against your will, off a holed, helpless, big tank in which you bought your passage, than in quietly dying of colic caused by the imperfect salmon in the tin you bought from your grocer."
