I do not think this was the method. I saw an anthropologist's 16 mm movie
made in the 1930s, as I recall, in which the islanders moved one of statues
left just outside the quarry. They used conventional stone-age techniques
such as rolling logs and lots of manpower. This is the same technique used
to build Stonehenge. I believe there are enough marks on the rocks to
confirm that.
