Just to speculate off the cuff, here, there could be a kind of resonance
that is activated with the symmetric signal about ground.  I have in my
mind a violin bow across a bow string.  You have to draw it back and forth
at the right speed.  Too fast or too slow and you just get the kind of
ineffective screechy sound that a beginner learning the violin makes.
