This sounds a bit like the alchemists who were trying to turn Lead into
Gold.
Personally I doubt that in those days this technology was available for
them as it requires probably C(12) atoms to be transmuted into Fe(26) atoms.
However, it could be that they were able to make iron alloy products
with other metals like Chromium or something else, which as you may know
can prevent corrosion of the iron.
This technology was as far as I know at least available to the allies
(at least in the UK).
