I found a bike kit (magic pie) with a 1000 watt electric motor and 40 volt 10 amp hour lithium ion batteries. I got the 1000 watt motor, not for speed, but to take big me up a hill. It will go 30 MPH, way to fast for a bike. The motorized wheel and the rack mount battery are heavy. My bike is steel and is heavy. I think the large bike frame can take the additional stress. The additional weight limits the use of the bike when peddling only. The motor also offers some drag when un-powered. I can add just a little bit of power to counter this additional drag.
I spent $800 for the system and I am interested to getting it together before mid spring. I went to rear wheel drive because I was told it was more stable. I have no idea on how to swap the sprocket on the rear wheel assembly. I hope I can go 23 miles every day for 10 years on it. I will see. It could result in my first experience getting hit by a car. I will try to avoid that. Perhaps when the batteries wear out in 5 years the lithium ion battery pack will cost less than $450. I wanted electric transport now I will have it, abet, only the form of a bike. Frank
