Maybe the "fan" method (blow air down a tube and measure the velocity) isn't as 
simple as it might seem :

One would have to be very careful to "traverse" the duct, to make sure that 
there isn't laminar flow, where the velocity near the tube is much lower than 
at the center.

Maybe insert a grid holding streamers, so that one can see at a glance if the 
flow varies much.
