As the protons lose their charge, the neutrons in the nucleus become repulsive and push the nucleus apart.
You cannot have a nucleus full of neutrons, it just won’t do. Charge screening means neutron repulsion. There is a wide range of charge screening levels that can happen and an associated nuclear breakup profile for each level.
