Close enough to win the cigar --- but upside down. You can't use a thermocouple as a heating device, but you CAN use a heating device as a thermocouple. The resistance of a metal is proportional to temperature. So when the heater is nominally OFF, just put a small DC (!!??) voltage across it and measure the current !!!! (Calibrated when it's cold, of course). (Maybe even when it's running: if the ecat is a lot hotter than the heater you will see the resistance rise)
