Close enough to win the cigar --- but upside down.

You can't use a thermocouple as a heating device, but you CAN use a heating 
device as a thermocouple.

The resistance of a metal is proportional to temperature. So when the heater is 
nominally OFF, just put a small DC (!!??) voltage across it and measure the 
current !!!!  (Calibrated when it's cold, of course).

(Maybe even when it's running: if the ecat is a lot hotter than the heater you 
will see the resistance rise)
