One possible reason why the first 6 months of the experimentation of Dr. Melvin Miles produced no reaction was the isotopic composition of the initial batch of palladium he used in the experiment.
The palladium isotope Pd105 has a non zero spin and could poison the reaction in the same why that air does. A new batch of palladium might have had a more favorable isotopic content with reduced levels of Pd105 content.
